An evening reception and public lecture by the pioneer of oral history, Professor Paul Thompson, University of Essex, and author of the international classic The Voice of the Past, preceded by an introduction on the work of the Scottish Oral History Centre by Profs Callum Brown and Arthur McIvor.

Professor Thompson will speak on his ongoing 'Pioneers of Social Research Oral History Project'.

Professor Paul Thompson is one of the world's leading experts on oral history.  He is Emeritus Professor in Sociology at the University of essex, founder-editor of Oral History and founder of National Life Stories at the British Library.  His other books include The Edwardians, Living the Fishing, and The Work of William Morris.  He is co-author of Growing up in Stepfamilies, of The Myths We Live By (with Raphael Samuel), and (with Daniel Bertaux) Pathways to Social Class.
