For the first time in the UK, Glasgow will host the 26th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP26) of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, between the 9th – 20th November 2020. COP26 will bring together up to 200 world leaders to agree a new, long-term deal on rising temperatures, whilst also attracting up to 30,000 delegates to Glasgow. In the run up to COP26, Strathclyde is holding several events to engage the public and local organisations in ongoing discussions related to climate change.
COP26 provides a context for an urgently needed focus on the future of travel, tourism and hospitality (TTH) in the light of growing debate about climate change. The sector is now in the spotlight of scrutiny, most obviously in relation to air travel and the emergence of the "flygskam", or fly shame, movement in Scandinavia and beyond. There are issues associated with the demand and supply side, relating to fundamental behavioural change.
The aim of this Workshop will be to open up debate between stakeholders on the future of TTH in an era of growing climate change awareness. Contributions will present technological, environmental, socio-economic and political perspectives on complex issues that are important both globally and for the future of Scotland. The event will include the opportunity for participants to help frame a debate on the future of TTH at a further event planned to coincide with COP26.
To help frame the debate and an agenda on the future of TTH at COP26. This is a one-off chance to influence policy for the TTH sector in the future and to help frame its future in a responsible manner.
