This roundtable event will bring together academics and national/international policy makers to discuss the challenges of international cooperation to combat illegal fisheries and fisheries crime for sustainable oceans governance.

Featuring academics, experts from national fisheries and enforcement agencies, environmental prosecutors, and international agencies, the discussion will address:

  • challenges of conceptualising fisheries crime,
  • connections with corruption and transnational organised crime,
  • challenges of mainstreaming and coordinating the criminal law approach in the broader context of sustainable fisheries management and global oceans governance.

The discussions will be facilitated by Dr Antonio Cardesa-Salzmann (University of Strathclyde), together with the following academic experts:

  • Dr Maria Marquès i Banqué, Lecturer in Criminal Law at the Universitat Rovira i Virgili (Tarragona, Spain) and member of the Tarragona Centre for Environmental Law Studies (CEDAT).
  • Dr Endrius Cocciolo, Associate Professor of Public Law at the Universitat Rovira i Virgili and member of CEDAT.

Who should attend?

The event is specifically aimed at Scottish policy makers and stakeholders in the fisheries sector. This includes MSPs, Scottish Government / SEPA officials, members of the Scottish Sentencing Council, representatives of third sector organisations and researchers in the field of sustainable fisheries and oceans governance.
