Drawing on the LGBTQI+ Lives Scotland / CILIA-LGBTQI+ project Comparing Intersectional Life Course (In)equalities Among LGBTQI+ people, this event examines the history, present and futures of LGBTQI+ inclusions in school, college and university cultures, communities and curricula.

2018 marked 30 years since the introduction of Section 28, a controversial piece of legislation prohibiting the ‘promotion of homosexuality’ in schools and local authority services. Repealed in Scotland in 2001, we have since witnessed significant changes in LGBTQI+ inclusion across the education sectors – most recently via the Scottish Government’s commitment to implement LGBT-inclusive education across Scottish state schools.

Through archival displays, film screenings, and interactive sessions, join researchers from Strathclyde’s School of Education to explore these issues and tensions further. Speakers will include:

  • Tour of Section 28/2A archival materials led by Sue John of Glasgow Women’s Library.
  • Panel discussion featuring Strathclyde academics, researchers and educators: Professor Yvette Taylor, Dr Churnjeet Mahn, Justin Beck, Dr Maddie Breeze, and Dr Matson Lawrence.
  • Video contributions from specialists reflecting upon the history and contemporary context of LGBTQI+ exclusions and inclusions in education.
