This event provides a space to discuss one particular human right – a right that is intuitively understood, but at the same time criticised for being vague, the right to be free from ‘degrading treatment’. It is a right that is associated with a wide range of situations, such as prison conditions, social/health care, destitution, and circumstances of non-nationals.
This event marks the launch of a book based on ten years of research, which is the first book-length study of what degrading treatment means and how far its application stretches.
The event will be an informal discussion with contributions from invited panel members followed by audience-led discussions, questions and recommendations. All delegates are invited to join us for a networking lunch from 12-1pm.
The book ‘Dignity, Degrading Treatment and Torture in Human Rights Law: The Ends of Article 3 of the European Convention on Human Rights will be available in May.
