Strathclyde Business School is delighted to welcome Umida Niyazova, Director of the Uzbek Forum for Human Rights, to speak at Engage 2023. At a time when the former soviet republics have taken centre stage of public attention, due to the war in Ukraine, Umida and Strathclyde colleagues will discuss human rights developments in Uzbekistan's cotton sector and society.

The event is supported by the newly developed Strathclyde Cluster on Central Asia and Former Soviet States (SCAFSS) and the SBS Cross-Disciplinary Research Fund. SCAFSS and the cross-disciplinary research is supported by academics from across Strathclyde including Dr Darren McGuire, Professor Laura Piacentini, Dr Pratima Sambajee, Dr Jen Remnant, Dr Paul Lassalle and Dr Dilshod Makhmadshoev.

Attendees are welcome to join us for a networking and refreshment following the event.

Who should attend?

This event is targeted towards

  • Academic staff in Strathclyde Business School, Humanities and Social Sciences at Strathclyde and across other Scottish universities
  • Postgraduate research students
  • Local and international policymakers, civil society organisations, and human and labour rights activists
  • Members of the public interested in developments in Central Asia and Uzbekistan

Benefits of attending

Sharing insight into the work of international civil society human rights monitors and the lived experiences of labour activists in Uzbekistan, the event provides an opportunity to get involved in the work of SCAFSS, and to network with researchers, policymakers, and labour activists. This event aims to provide an update on the evolution of forced labour in Uzbekistan’s cotton sector and society.
